What and where? Tasmania was once connected to mainland Australia but at the end of the last ice age, some 13,000 years ago, this land bridge submerged to make an island. Dutchman Abel Tasman arrived here in 1642 and named the island Van Diemens Land. In 1804 Hobart (capital city) was founded and in 1856 Van Diemens Land became know as Tasmania.
